A walking and sightseeing guided tour based in Lagos, once a landmark of the Portuguese Discoveries, and refuge of pirates.
You'll walk along some of the West Algarve's most impressive natural landscapes while taking a historical perspective of this fascinating region.
Lagos was the point of departure and arrival for the ships that set sail in the discovery of new worlds, due to its unique bay and port, directly across from Africa. From here, Henry the Navigator dreamed of unknown lands and lavish richness.
This walking holiday will take you through stunning coastal scenery, in some iconic paths of high cliffs with crystal clear waters beneath. It has a historic and sightseeing character, designed to give you a glimpse of the West Algarve rich past and history and to know more about the Discoveries landmarks in the West Algarve.
In the monuments and places of historical interest, including Sagres and Cape St Vincent, you'll imagine the bravery of those willing to face the unknown for glory, the infamous role of Lagos as the first point of entry for slaves in Europe, and the scientific and technological breakthroughs achieved at the time.
Today, Lagos is a cosmopolitan city with a relaxed atmosphere, making it one of the most appealing locations in the Algarve. The wall bordering the waterfront is beautiful and in the old town, you can find shops, restaurants, tons of history and culture.
Last but not least, Lagos comes alive at night with street artists and bars for every taste with live music.
The weather on the West Algarve is mild, even during the winter months, making it a lovely region for walking and nature activities. The shoreline flows in impressive wild cliffs shaped by sea and wind, caves, grottoes, and dramatic limestone escarpments.
Along the coast, fishermen go out to the sea for sardines and octopus, and at low tide, you can see people walking to find seafood or wading out to the rocks, under the Atlantic pounding waves to harvest goose barnacles in a very dangerous catch.
This backdrop of real life is one of the best layers of your guided Walking in the Age of Discoveries.
There will be time for an array of different activities, including the visit to a wine estate for a guided and commented wine tasting.
Accompanied by the estate’s professional staff, we’ll tour through the winery and wine cellar, with some disclosure of the secrets behind the art of making wine.
The Walking & Sightseeing tour in the Age Of Discoveries is led by a professional local guide with deep insider's knowledge of the region. The personal insight that the guide shares with you can make each turn more exciting, and each new vista richly rewarding!

Today, the day will be dedicated to walking and discovering the coastal town of Lagos. This is one of the Algarve’s most historic and picturesque towns. We will have time to explore the 14th century castle walls, the narrow cobbled streets, the traditional pottery shops and the numerous pavements cafes from which to watch the world go by! Lagos has a relaxed atmosphere, making it one of the most appealing locations in the Algarve. We will have time to savour a relaxed lunch and explore the city.
If the weather conditions allow, we will take a boat trip along the coast to see the breath-taking colours of the ocean reflected in the hidden caves and secretive rock formations. Amazing colours that pictures do not do justice, you have to see it to believe it!
From our privileged hotel location, we walk today to “Ponta da Piedade” where the rugged sandy cliffs meet the see and offer some of the most astonishing views of the west coast of the Algarve.
From here, we walk to Porto de Mós, a quiet white sandy beach area, to enjoy a relaxed lunch in a traditional local restaurant just above the sand line contemplating the wonders of the sea waves meeting the shore.
For the more adventurous an optional walk back to the hotel, will be offered!
We take a morning cliff-top stroll between the fishing villages of Luz and Burgau, with time to explore at either end. Luz is a wonderful little village, located on the coastline at the foot of the Atalaia cliff. Burgau is a former fishing village, which still displays signs of its former life.
Its fishing boats parked on the beach and its cobbled narrow streets sweeping through the village make this a unique and enchanting place.
Today is the day to relax, walk, sunbathe, take pictures or do nothing at all! Relax by the swimming pool, enjoying a well-deserved refreshment. Walk into town, visit the monuments you got curious about and at your own pace, collect the memories you’ll take home with you.
If the sea calls out for you, choose a nice beach close by and pile up on Vitamin D! Enjoy our calm, transparent waters and the sea minerals will do the rest!
From our hotel in Lagos, we make a short drive to the fishing village of Alvor.
Traditionally Portuguese in appearance with its white washed buildings, narrow cobbled streets and fishing boats bobbing gently in the sea, we’ll enjoy a sea front walk, have time to visit the town and follow the boardwalks through gentle scenery of sand dunes, ancient salt pans, traditional farmland and thriving freshwater marshes.
In the afternoon there will be the chance to visit the “Quinta dos Vales Wine Estate” for a guided and commented wine tasting. Accompanied by the Estate’s professional staff, there’ll be a tour through the winery and wine cellar, with some disclosure of the secrets behind the art of making wine. As they say: “You will learn to observe, smell and taste the wine – and you’ll be tasting wine like a pro in no time!”
Today we will drive to the lighthouse of Cape St Vincent, the most south westerly point of Europe, where the cliffs bathed by a contrastive Atlantic Ocean suddenly gain other tones and textures.
We will have time to enjoy a nice leisurely walk along the rugged cliff tops, alongside the Atlantic. Today we have included a delicious fish lunch at one of the local restaurants, so you can relax with a glass of wine in hand sampling the local fresh fish.
At convenient time transfer to the Airport.
With a privileged location, 1km away from the closest beach, the Aqualuz Suite Hotel Apartments**** is a modern hotel, embellished with light coloured furniture and open door areas.
